Yiqiu Liu is a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Architecture of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich. Graduated with honours from Southeast University in Nanjing, China, she holds Bachelor and Master degree of Architecture. Her current doctor research focuses on the urbanization process of Beijing through the lens of the ideal planned urban images, under the supervision by Prof. Christian Schmid and Prof. Christian Kerez. Her thesis will investigate the long-term contradiction between spontaneous urban growth and the institutional limitations triggered by different visions of “ideal Beijing” since the founding of communist China in 1949. By combining approaches from the disciplines of critical urban theory, urban planning and sociology, her research will contribute to the conceptualisation of modern Beijing and the understanding of the current Chinese urban planning process.

Besides academic work, Yiqiu is a practising architect and urban planner. She was the winner of the 2016 BAITASI International competition and constructed her architecture project – Lian Courtyard in Beijing in 2019. She worked as an intern and junior architect in Christian Kerez GmbH in Switzerland and Germany on several competitions respectively in 2016 and 2017. Since October 2019, She has joined LEP Consultants AG, an ETH spin-off company, supporting the teams in Switzerland and China in various projects related to village rehabilitation and urban master planning.

Yiqiu is also the overseas contributing editor of Beijing Planning Review journal and the deputy head of Swiss-Chinese Chamber of Architects and Art Student Sector.
